Improving Data Visibility

The Challenge: Limited Visibility Slowed Teams Down

When something goes wrong with the state of a location, users of MarketSpark’s Command Center platform want visibility to quickly understand what is happening within their system.

For example, if a location’s operational status of availability suddenly becomes “Not Operational”, we should be able to find out what caused it. Did a fellow teammate make a change they shouldn’t have? How has the location’s status changed in the last few hours or days? These are just a few of the questions that can be answered with our activity log feature.

The Solution: The Activity Log

The Activity Log provides visibility into key events by capturing changes to important user and location attributes.

  • Whenever a User is created, updated or deleted, we log what changed for the following attributes:
    • Status (Active/Inactive)
    • Name
    • Email
    • Phone Number
    • Role (User/Admin/etc)
  • Whenever a Location is updated, we log what changed for the following attributes:
    • Status (Operational/Not Operational/etc)
    • Billing (On/Off)
    • Name

The Impact: Confidence Through Data Visibility

With customers having thousand of lines and hundreds — or even thousands — of locations, it is essential that they can obtain data visibility of the relevant history of what is happening within their MarketSpark installations. And when something has gone wrong, it is even more crucial. When we improve observability on our platform, we empower customers and internal users to better understand and respond to what is happening at their locations.

Looking Ahead

We are always evaluating how we can improve our features and what other events would be most useful to users. With what we have already in place, we can very quickly deliver new event types about changes to equipment, organizations, locations, signal status, and more.

Thoughtful planning is underway to determine the most effective ways to present other types of information, both now and as the system evolves. For the events we currently expose, we display a list view with highlighted changes. This is suitable for the events we have so far. But signal status changes, for example, might be better visualized on a graph. Look out for new data and new visualizations in the future.
